If you’re looking for a crop that gets children excited about gardening, carrots are hard to beat.
There’s something magical about pulling a carrot from the soil — especially when you don’t know what colour it will be until it’s in your hand.
In our garden, carrots are a favorite. The kids love tugging them free and eating them straight from the garden, still warm from the sun and dusted with soil. No convincing required.
The Surprise Factor 🌈
One of our favourite varieties is the Rainbow Mix from Kings Seeds.
Each carrot is a surprise:
Orange
Purple
Yellow
White
You can’t tell what colour you’ll get unless you dig carefully around the top or pull it up completely — and that element of surprise keeps kids coming back for more.
Why Carrots Are Perfect for Kids
Carrots tick so many boxes when it comes to gardening with children:
Fast reward – they grow reliably and are ready before interest fades
Hands-on harvesting – pulling them up feels like a treasure hunt
Encourages outdoor time – fresh air, sunshine, and movement
Builds food confidence – kids are far more likely to eat what they grow
Teaches patience – watching tops grow before the reward below
They’re also forgiving, making them ideal for beginner gardeners.
Learning Happens Underground
Carrots open up gentle learning opportunities:
Root systems and how plants grow beneath the soil
Why soil structure matters (loose, crumbly soil = happy carrots)
How thinning seedlings helps plants thrive
The garden becomes a classroom — without anyone realising they’re learning.
Growing Carrots Simply
To keep carrots fun and frustration-free:
Sow seeds directly into the garden
Choose loose, stone-free soil. We often use seed raising mix on top of loose garden soil. Sprinkle the seeds, water with a fine sprinkler setting.
Having the seed raising mix helps you see the area you've planted them in
Water gently and consistently
Thin seedlings so roots have space to grow
Avoid fresh manure, which can cause forking
Carrots grow well in deep containers too (just think how big a carrot is and that's how deep your container is to be).
If you have cats, we place wooden forks in the soil first pointy side up before we sprinkle the seeds
When carrots grow well, harvesting becomes a joy instead of a struggle.
A Gateway Crop 🌱
Carrots are often the first plant that helps children:
Trust where food comes from
Develop pride in growing something themselves
Feel capable and connected to nature
Once carrots succeed, confidence grows — for kids and adults alike.
Straight from the Garden
There’s nothing quite like watching a child pull a carrot from the soil, wipe it on their shirt, and take a bite.
It’s simple. It’s grounding. And it plants seeds that go far beyond the garden bed.
TOP TIP: Don't throw away the carrot tops after harvest. You can make carrot top pesto! Here's the recipe.
